Read the machine label first
Find the manufacturer's input label and record voltage, frequency and rated current. Do not infer requirements from a plug that may have been replaced during the machine's life.
If a machine was imported or converted, document every transformer or adapter in the power path. Mystery power conversions are a reason to slow down.
Inspect before energizing
After transport, look for loose plugs, pinched cables, damaged insulation and objects that may have shifted inside the cabinet. Do not reach into mains-voltage areas while the machine is connected.
A machine that smells burned, trips a breaker or shows visible heat damage should stay unplugged until inspected by someone qualified to service it.
Outlet and room planning
Avoid daisy-chained extension cords and overloaded strips in a room full of machines, displays and lighting. Plan receptacles where cords are protected from feet, casters and cabinet doors.
If you are building a multi-machine room, an electrician can help determine circuit loading and outlet placement. The cabinet label provides a better planning input than a generic estimate from another collector.
Surge protection and shutdown
Quality surge protection can be useful for electronic collectibles, but it is not a substitute for healthy internal power supplies or grounding. Follow the machine's intended shutdown procedure when documentation specifies one.
If a machine will sit unused for long periods, think about battery-backed boards separately from the main AC power path.
Document modifications
Keep a simple note inside your collection inventory describing transformers, replacement power supplies, adapters and any electrical work. Future you will appreciate it.
